Morning coffee a ‘meal in a cup’
How your morning coffee could contain more calories than a burger
The quick coffee you grab on your way to work could contain more than a fifth of your daily calorie intake, a study has revealed.
Some of those tested by Which? contained a belly-bloating 400 calories.
The coffee culprits? Lashings of full-fat milk, cream and chocolate.
Researchers found that a skimmed milk cappuccino weighed in at around the 30-calorie mark, while some coffee house offerings at three leading chains weighed in at more than a burger.
One mocha coffee made with full-fat milk added up to 396 calories, and the same coffee with semi-skimmed milk – but topped with whipped cream – contained 326.
If you want to be really good, opt for a black coffee – it contains virtually no calories, with an ‘Americano’ tested at one shop containing only 17.
But even plumping for skimmed milk makes a massive difference, say Which?.
One skimmed milk café latte tested contained 71 calories, while a ‘skinny’ cappuccino, with more froth and less milk, had only 27.
And the snacks weren?t much better. One ‘fruity flapjack’ had a calorie-count of 423, while a cheese and pickle sandwich in another chain topped 500 calories.
